Child actor Gagnon has been cast as Ethan, the son of Berry's character Molly, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The 8-year-old won critical acclaim for his role as Cid in 2012 film Looper and also played a recurring role on The CW's One Tree Hill.

Extant - which has been picked up for 13 episodes - will premiere on CBS in summer 2014.

Spielberg previously stated that he is "incredibly honoured" to be collaborating with star and co-exec producer Berry on the project,

"As she does with everything she touches, she will bring a deep authenticity to her role and I very much look forward to working with her," said the Lincoln director.
