Extant has broken Amazon Prime Instant Video UK’s rating records, the streaming service has announced.

Much like Netflix, Amazon Prime Instant Video UK do not release specific metrics for any of their series and, while they did not reveal how many people watched the series premiere on Extant in the past 24 hours, Amazon said that requests for the episode were three times higher than those for an opening episode of any other TV series in the history of the streaming service
It is understood that the first day viewing figures for the series premiere of the Halle Berry fronted drama even outpaced the first day figures of the second season of Vikings. That makes Extant the top performing show amongst Amazon Prime Instant Video UK’s crop of exclusive series, outperforming numerous Amazon originals including Alpha House and Betas.
Extant is a futuristic thriller about a female astronaut (Halle Berry) trying to reconnect with her family when she returns after a year in outer space. Her experiences lead to events that ultimately will change the course of human history. The cast also includes Camryn Manheim, Michael O’Neill, Grace Gummer, Pierce Gagnon, Hiroyuki Sanada and Goran Visnjic.
The drama series was created by newcomer Mickey Fisher and is produced by Amblin Television in association with CBS Television Studios. The executive producers are Steven Spielberg, Greg Walker, Mickey Fisher, Brooklyn Weaver, Justin Falvey and Darryl Frank.
Amazon secured the exclusive UK rights to Extant back in May in a landmark deal with international distributor CBS Studios International after beating off competition from a number of traditional UK broadcasters. New episodes of Extant premiere on Amazon Prime Instant Video UK every Thursday, mere hours after they air state-side on CBS.
“Extant is a new frontier for our service, with its Hollywood pedigree and star studded cast, this exclusive marks our commitment to offering customers access to some of the most anticipated shows in the world, said Russell Morris, Marketing & Merchandising Director of Amazon Prime Instant Video. “With premiere figures outstripping our hugely popular exclusive show Vikings, Extant looks set to be the television event of the summer.”

Halle Berry ditches the glamour and steps out in a loose-fitting, low-key outfit as she stocks up on some reading material

Halle Berry ditches the glamour and steps out in a loose-fitting, low-key outfit as she stocks up on some reading material

She famously displayed her toned pins in a sexy burnt orange bikini for her role in James Bond.
But on Sunday, Halle Berry came crashing back down to reality and opted to keep her famous figure covered up as she stepped out in Malibu on her weekly grocery shop.
The 47-year-old actress, who is married to French actor Olivier Martinez, looked a million miles from the sexy star she is known to be as she dressed down for the day in a pair of grey tie-dye pants and comfortable flip-flops.

She teamed her low-key getup with a black strappy vest top, which she covered up with a matching sheer overlay blouse while accessorising with a stylish pair of aviator sunglasses and a white cap.
Halle was pictured bearing a huge smile as she headed over to a local newsstand to grab some of the latest magazines, clearly stocking up on a spot of reading material as she enjoyed a rare break in her schedule.
Earlier this month, the Hollywood star debuted new TV drama Extant, a 13-episode thriller where she plays Molly Woods, an astronaut who returns to earth having been impregnated by something in outer space.

Halle recently spoke about her decision to take a starring role in the CBS series, by telling Entertainment Weekly: 'The minute I started to read it, I couldn't put it down.
'I thought, "Wow. This is different". It's innovative. Molly is a strong female character, which I really love to play. Molly is a complicated woman with a complicated family,' she added.
The X-Men star, who is mother to eight-month-old son Maceo and six-year-old daughter Nahla, explained how she needed something exciting  to keep her enticed.
'I was being offered parts that I felt like I had done before. They weren’t exciting enough for me to leave my family for four months,' the actress went on to say.
‘I realised some of the best writing especially for women, was on television.’
