Oprah-Halle movie spurs author family feud

Oprah-Halle movie spurs author family feud

The great Harlem Renaissance writer Zora Neale Hurston died penniless in 1960 — but Oprah Winfrey has given the author’s heirs something to fight about since turning one of her books into a TV movie starring Halle Berry.
Hurston’s grandniece Dr. Lois Hurston Gaston, of Florida, is suing the author’s niece Lucy Anne Hurston of Connecticut over the writer’s trust, which has generated $1 million in annual income since the 2005 flick “Their Eyes Were Watching God.”
The two women helped set up the Hurston Trust in 2001 to collect the rights to the writer’s works and capitalize off their value.

But the language of the trust is unclear about who controls the money since the number of heirs has ballooned from seven to 21.
Gaston, who owns 10 percent of the trust, claims Lucy Anne Hurston, who has the most power with a 26 percent interest, is trying to disenfranchise the other 19 heirs and maintain her grip on the money.
Lucy Anne’s “view is that the Hurston Trust should be interpreted so as to allow her to remain a trustee for so long as she pleases, with full veto power over any and all actions taken in the administration of the Hurston Trust,” Gaston charges in the Manhattan Surrogate’s Court case.
Hurston replied in legal papers last week that she is not being “selfish” and believes the dispute does not belong in court. She asked the judge to toss it.
Zora Neale Hurston’s books have been selling 500,000 copies a year since the adaptation of her 1937 novel, “Their Eyes Were Watching God,” aired on ABC in 2005. Winfrey served as executive producer, and it was backed by her Harpo Productions studios.
The author, a graduate of Barnard College, wrote most of her novels in Harlem in the 1930s and 1940s.
She inspired other African-American greats — including Toni Morrison and Alice Walker — but never realized enduring financial success.
Now her own story of literary redemption is at risk as the family battles over her legacy.
Last week, Judge Rita Mella urged both sides to settle the conflict out of court. The family’s lawyers are deciding whether to take Mella’s suggestion and join a mediation program sponsored by the Surrogate’s Court.
Gaston told The Post it was “extremely important” to her relative’s legacy to settle the case.
Her lawyer, Frank Santoro, said, “One of the unfortunate consequences of Zora Neale Hurston’s life was that she died a pauper and she didn’t have any estate plan.
“The works that she authored that are now known as a national treasure were strewn to the four winds,” he said.
Lucy Anne Hurston and other relatives did not return calls for comment.

Actress Halle Berry surprised everybody naming her newborn son Maceo Robert Martinez.
So, what’s in a name?
The Oscar-winning actress and husband Olivier Martinez welcomed baby Maceo upon his arrival this past Saturday at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, Calif.
Martinez who made a name for himself in his homeland France, acting in movies such as “un, deux, trois, soleil“  or “1,2,3, Freeze” is originally from the suburbs of Paris but chose the name Maceo because of its meaning and relation to his Spanish ancestry.
Maceo or “Gift from God” was a name the couple picked some months back, a nod to Martinez’s father who was born in Spain.
Maceo is Berry and Martinez’s first child together. He is also be Nahla Ariela’s first little brother. Nahla is the 47-year-old actress’ daughter from a previous relationship with model Gabriel Aubry.

Halle Berry to raise son as an American

Martinez is French with a Spanish background, likewise Berry is also of mixed descent.
She was born Maria Halle Berry but her name was switched to Halle Maria Berry when she turned five. Her mother was white of English and German ancestry and her father was African American.
Of races and nationalities Martinez has said, “My son will remain an American, but I will remain French. I remain a Frenchman in America, but I adapt to American culture. I feel good there– But I’m still a foreigner.”
In his interview with People magazine in late June he again confirmed “My son will be an American.”
In a previous article, VOXXI touched upon the fact that Bruno Mars, born Peter Hernandez, had changed his last name to avoid being stereotyped as a Latino singer by music industry executives. We wonder if Halle Berry’s son Maceo’s last name might raise some questions about his identity in the future.
Just how effective are last names in identifying what ancestry, country or ethnicity to assign to a person? Does a last name make a person Latino?
One thing is certain: culture, appearance, ethnicity and race are all ingredients in the cooking pot of identity. So when the cooking timer sounds off,  will we be able to answer “Who is Latino?”

What's old is new again for Halle Berry and her husband Olivier Martinez.
On Monday the name of their son, born Saturday in Los Angeles, was leaked and it's rather unusual.
The couple have chosen Maceo as the first name for their child, according to TMZ.

They reportedly selected for a middle name Robert, after the French actor's Spanish father. The last name is Martinez.
Maceo originally comes from Spain and was popular from the ninth to 14th centuries. It morphed into Matteo then Matthew over time.
The name translates to Gift Of God. It's easy to figure out how Halle landed on that name because she several times said her pregnancy was a 'miracle.'

On the day Maceo was born, Halle's first child, daughter Nahla, was seen holding the hand of her birth father, model Gabriel Aubry.
She looked excited as the two strolled on the sidewalk.
The five-year-old has reportedly been thrilled about the arrival of her younger sibling.

E! Online reported that Berry had delivered her latest bundle of joy at Cedars Sinai Hospital, where countless celebrity children have been born over the years.
The delivery came just a day after the Catwoman star had been spotted out in West Hollywood at restaurant Rivabella looking ready to pop in a sheer shirt covering her huge bump.
This is the second child for the 47-year-old Die Another Day star.
As for the first-time dad, the Parisian S.W.A.T. actor told People: 'My son will remain an American, but I will remain French,' he explained. 'I remain a Frenchman in America, but I adapt to American culture.'
Berry and Martinez were married in a stunning ceremony in Vallery, France, in July where she wore a beautiful Jenny Packham gown.
The Monster's Ball Oscar winner was previously married to baseball player David Justice in the early 1990s and to singer Eric Benét in the early 2000s.

While motherhood is obviously the only thing on her mind right now, the 47-year-old actress has just signed on to star in a serialised drama coming to CBS next summer called Extant, a 13-episode thriller.
Berry will play an astronaut trying to reconnect with her family when she returns after a year in outer space. Her experiences lead to events that change the course of history.
The series is being made in partnership with Steven Spielberg's Amblin Television, which made last summer's surprise hit for CBS, Under the Dome.
