Jenesse Centre Gallery and What A Little Love Can Do

http://www.jenesse.org/HowYouCanHelp/HalleBerryWhatALittleLoveCanDo.html

http://www.jenesse.org/Gallery/mediaGallery-6srGala_Slide.html

Dear Friends of the Jenesse Center,
This year, I have taken on a unique challenge. My goal is to completely remodel one of Jenesse Center’s transitional housing shelters. It is my belief that the spirits of many battered women have been so broken that they can only DREAM of living independently in a safe, warm and beautiful space free of the horrors of the past. Through living in an apartment that was designed with love and attention to detail that is reflective of modern day living, I believe these women and children will have an amazing opportunity to begin to live a reality that is possible and most importantly, begin to dream the dream for themselves.

I kicked off my project by funding two of the 15 remodels myself. The first apartment is a children’s space that I affectionately named NAHLA’S WORLD after my daughter. It’s a place where the children can go to obtain new clothing as needed, have parties, play dates, play games, read and have much needed art and psycho therapy. By honoring the children in this way, I believe it lays the foundation for healthy mental development and a belief that they are worthy far beyond their circumstance. The second apartment is for a family in need. I completely gutted the space adding new appliances and replaced the old out dated heating system for more energy efficient use. I would like to use the same basic model for each apartment to keep the consistency throughout the building.

I am looking for sponsors to complete this project. As part of sponsorship, you will:
  • Name your space as you like
  • Receive a video of the complete remodel process
  • Receive a pictorial of before and after photos
  • Receive a grand reveal of the apartment with photo opportunities

If you would like to become a part of this project, please contact Karen Earl at (323) 299-9496 ext. 102, or by email at kearl@jenesse.org. Thank you for helping Jenesse make a difference and being a shining example of what a little love can do.

Released early this week, the first trailer for Frankie and Alice starring Halle Berrry shows a performance by the actress reminiscent of her role in Monster's Ball, which earned her an Oscar.
Based on the true story of Frankie Murdoch, the psychological drama focuses on a woman suffering with Disassociate Identity Disorder or multiple personalities. Set in the 1970s, the footage shows the character's various disconnected selves, including a dancer and a racist, intercut with therapy sessions with her doctor in a psychiatric facility.

The film costars Stellan Skarsgard (Angels & Demons), Phylicia Rashad (For Colored Girls) and Matt Frewer (Watchmen) and is directed by Geoffrey Sax (White Noise).

The film was scheduled for release on December 10, most likely for consideration in the upcoming Oscar race.

Halle Berry's 'Frankie and Alice' premieres

Tuesday, November 30, 2010
George Pennacchio

LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- "Frankie and Alice" is a movie Halle Berry wanted to make for more than a decade.
She got her wish, but it took a while for the movie to find a home.
Now that it has one, there is a lot of excitement for the movie and its stars.
"This is the biggest moment of my life," said co-star Joey Bothwell. "Let's be honest. Halle Berry? Come On. What gets better than Halle Berry?"
Halle Berry takes on several roles all wrapped in one body in "Frankie and Alice."
The film is based on the true story of Frankie Murdoch, a woman dealing with multiple personality disorder in the early 1970s.
One of her alters is a racist white woman.
"I was never going to let her go. Until I got too old to play it and whenever that day came, I guess I would have sat down," Berry said about making the film. "I just have been passionate about it from the minute I heard about it.
"It's just this little movie that we all cared about, so it feels like it's meant to happen because it is happening," Berry added. "If it weren't meant to happen, it wouldn't have. It was on pace not to, so this does feel good tonight."

While Berry begins to generate Oscar buzz for her performance, there is another kind of buzz in the air at the premiere: pure excitement for some lesser known stars.
"Frankie and Alice" opens in limited release Dec.10. It goes wide in February.

Halle Berry Confirms Plans to Star in The Mountaintop on Broadway

Academy Award winner Halle Berry has confirmed that she will make her Broadway debut in Katori Hall's The Mountaintop opposite Oscar nominee Samuel L. Jackson, according to ETOnline.
Berry and Jackson's casting in the Broadway production of the Olivier Award-nominated play has been rumored for months. Berry made the announcement during the premiere of her new film "Frankie and Alice." No official casting has been announced.
The New York Post first alluded to the casting of the two Hollywood heavyweights in July. Jackson has participated in previous readings of the play for industry members.
The Mountaintop is aiming for a fall 2011 Broadway arrival. Sonia Friedman (La Bete, La Cage aux Folles) and Jean Doumanian Productions will present the play that will be directed by Kenny Leon (Fences, A Raisin in the Sun).

The Mountaintop premiered at London's Theatre 503 in June 2009. The play transferred to the Trafalgar Studio 1 in the West End and earned the Olivier Award for Best Play. David Harewood and Lorraine Burroughs starred. Here's how producers describe the work: "Taking place on April 3, 1968, The Mountaintop is a gripping reimagining of events the night before the assassination of civil rights leader Martin Luther King, Jr., as he retires to Room 306 in the now famous Lorraine Motel in Memphis, after delivering his legendary 'I've Been to the Mountaintop' speech to a massive church congregation. When room-service is delivered by a young woman, whose identity we puzzle over, King is forced to confront his past, as well as his legacy to his

Halle Berry Dazzles at "Frankie & Alice" LA Premiere

Stepping out for her new movie, Halle Berry looked stunning as she arrived at the premiere of "Frankie and Alice" at the Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood, California on Tuesday night (November 30).
Opting to get glammed up in an intricately patterned black and gold jacket/pant ensemble, the Oscar winning actress joined director Geoffrey Sax while boosting interest in the drama which also stars Stellan Skarsgard, Phylicia Rashad and Chandra Wilson.

Aside from "Frankie & Alice," Miss Berry recently confirmed plans to take on a role in the upcoming "Cloud Atlas" project.
She told press, "I'm going to do a movie probably in the summer with the Wachowski's. It's not brothers anymore, but the Wachowski's. A really interesting movie. Sort of like what they did with The Matrix. They have another really amazing idea that's sort of gonna stretch our brains even further. And so I'm really excited about that and that's probably gonna be in the summer. And that's with Tom Hanks and Natalie Portman."

Enjoy the pictures of Halle Berry at the premiere of 'Frankie and Alice' (November 30).

Film Review: Frankie & Alice -- Starring Halle Berry

Friday, November 19, 2010

I didn't know what to expect going into the SAG nominating committee screening of Halle Berry's new film Frankie & Alice, a small, independent project that's been in the works for twelve years, shot on a shoestring budget in 25 days (only four months after Berry gave birth) co-produced by Berry and her longtime manager Vince Cirrincione. But I was pleasantly surprised.

Frankie & Alice, Berry's first film since starring in 2007's Things We Lost in the Fire, is a psychological drama that chronicles the life of Frankie Murdock, a stripper with a multiple personality disorder.

Based on a true story, the film, which takes place in Los Angeles in the 1970's, touches upon motherhood and interracial relationships as they pertain to Frankie's crippling disorder and her haunting past. Berry gives her gutsiest and most unflinching performance to date. And is a gem to watch as Alice, one of the personas she plays who happens to be a racist, white woman.

I asked Berry how she responded to the material and the characters she played coming from her own mixed background.

Left to Right: director, Geoffrey Sax; Halle Berry and moderator, Scott Feinberg
She explained that she had an innate, visceral response to the piece because she has racists people in her own family. She also discussed how her white mother was vilified for marrying a having children with a black man, all of which are themes in the film.

The premise of the script is nothing new. The female multiple personality disorder thing has been done (Sybil, The Three Faces of Eve) but how many films about multiple personality disorder feature a black woman in the lead role? How many major motion pictures showcase mental illness in black culture? Talking about feelings, seeing a psychiatrist and embracing mental health are still taboo topics in the black community that no one wants to acknowledge let alone discuss. It's refreshing to see a major Hollywood star like Berry take an interest in the under addressed topic and bring it to life on screen.

Watching Berry shift from one character to another right before your eyes is breathtaking and will leave you both uncomfortable and fascinated.

There are other solid performances in the film by Stellan Skarsgard who plays Berry's psychiatrist and Phylicia Rashad who plays Berry's evasive mother.

Frankie & Alice hits theatres December 17.

Frankie and Alice

Frankie and AliceHalle Berry in 'Frankie and Alice.'

A Freestyle Releasing (in U.S.) release of a Cinesavvy presentation of a Access Motion Pictures and Zaidi/Berry/Cirrincione production. Produced by Simon DeKaric, Vincent Cirrincione, Halle Berry, Hassain Zaidi. Executive producers, Shawn Williamson, Brendan Ferguson, John Roy, Abhi Rastogi. Directed by Geoffrey Sax. Screenplay, Cheryl Edwards, Marko King, Mary King, Jonathan Watters, Joe Shrapnel, Anna Waterhouse; story, Oscar Janiger, Philip Goldberg, Cheryl Edwards.

Dig past the capital-A acting and earnest telepic approach, and there's a metaphor for America's civil rights struggle fighting to be heard in real-life multiple-personality drama "Frankie and Alice." A bright Southern black woman raised in the 1950s, Frankie Murdoch saw her psyche split after a teenage trauma, forcing her to share precious mental space with a bigoted white blueblood. A decade in development (and a year on the shelf), producer-star Halle Berry's unevenly realized passion project shortchanges these themes in favor of "Sybil"-style diagnosis and treatment. Specialty item should repay Berry's efforts in respect, rather than receipts. With nine writers credited for their contributions to the script, Murdoch's story was obviously a tough one to crack, however conventional the result. When Frankie first appears, working as a go-go dancer in a seedy Los Angeles strip club, few would guess the intellectual potential this fallen woman once showed. In this environment, Frankie's erratic behavior blends right in. "Good moves, great tits, but pure psycho," goes the club manager's amateur diagnosis, but that's too broad an explanation for her frequent mood swings and memory lapses. When Frankie comes to her senses, she can't remember completing a crossword puzzle or buying the pricey gown in her closet, and as the condition goes untreated, she becomes a greater danger to herself and others.
As it turns out, Frankie is juggling three distinct personalities. One, known only as "Genius," manifests itself as a scared young girl, painfully shy yet dedicated to protecting Frankie. The next, named Alice, seems more malicious, the caricature of an imperious Southern belle who believes herself to be white and looks down on Frankie as a chain-smoking, promiscuous tramp. Every time one of these alters emerges, director Geoffrey Sax briefly opens the window into Frankie's troubled past, the result being that auds are always one step ahead of the characters.
Frankie's dissociative identity disorder is being treated by Dr. Joseph Oswald (Stellan Skarsgard), an absent-minded researcher whose methods are progressive by 1970s standards (he uses hypnotism in his treatment and participated in a landmark LSD study), but hopelessly square by today's. "Frankie and Alice" subscribes to the relatively simplistic notion that everything will be better, if only "Oz" can uncover the root of his patient's psychosis -- which, while ghastly, lacks the intended emotional punch.
Oz's conservative colleagues ridicule his decision to treat a black stripper, but the film never questions his judgment. In that respect, Sax (who comes from a background in British TV) delivers a film that is stylistically old-fashioned yet relatively enlightened in its attitudes toward race relations and mental illness, with the leading lady's mixed-race background adding an interesting dimension to the character's part-white, part-black state of mind.
Berry shows total commitment to the part, allowing herself to go unhinged in the hands of a director not quite capable of supporting such a risky tightrope act. In an early scene, a panicked Frankie runs out into a busy street, her breasts spilling out of her halter as she narrowly avoids being hit by passing traffic. Later, lines like, "I'm crazy as a shithouse rat," seem ready-made for parody.
The role poses a unique challenge: to play each of the personalities with total conviction while also handling the shifts between them as convincingly as possible. Berry does a virtuoso job of the former, but it's not until the film's climactic therapy session -- in which she alternates between her various personae with an "Exorcist"-like conviction -- that the underlying damage shown in flashbacks seems to have any connection to her character.
That rift exists partly because Frankie and childhood friend Paige are played by a range of actresses at different ages, though it helps that Phylicia Rashad remains constant as her steadfast mother, who guards an important secret about Frankie's past. Production values are adequate but unimpressive, with Vancouver doubling for 1970s Los Angeles and vintage-styled hair and costumes a bit too enamored with the era.

Harrods host Elie Saab exhibition

British department store Harrods is showcasing an exhibition of twelve Elie Saab gowns that made it down the red carpet over the past years. The selection by the Lebanese couturier includes pieces worn by celebrities such as Diane Kruger, Dame Helen Mirren and Gwyneth Paltrow at events including the Oscars or the BAFTA’s.

Among the dresses will be the haute couture dress that Halle Berry wore during the Academy Awards in 2002, where she took home the Best Actress Award.

Elie Saab shows in Paris and is known for his luxurious evening dresses and wedding gowns. The exhibition will be on display until 22nd December in the Luxury Collections lobby on the first floor. The designer launched his brand owned boutique on the first floor of Harrods in July 2008 selling eveningwear.
