The Telegraph - Cloud Atlas review

Cloud Atlas, review

Cloud Atlas is as elaborate as promised: sumptuously realised, and shot with its own unique style, finds Robbie Collin.

3 out of 5 stars

Dir: Andy Wachowski, Lana Wachowski, Tom Tykwer Starring: Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, Jim Broadbent, Hugo Weaving, Ben Whishaw, Hugh Grant.
13 cert, 172 min
How on earth do you map Cloud Atlas? This film, adapted from David Mitchells novel, is a sky-popping, cumulonimbic puff of stories, pictures and feelings, almost three hours long, directed by three people, Andy and Lana Wachowski and Tom Tykwer, and covering half-a-dozen distinct plot lines smeared across half a millennium.
It takes you from the South Pacific in 1849 to a tropical island time-stamped “106 winters after The Fall”, via 1930s Edinburgh, 1970s San Francisco, present-day London and 22nd-century Seoul. Each of these settings is sumptuously realised, and shot with its own unique style: the London segment feels like an Ealing comedy, while Korea could be an offshoot from the Wachowski siblings’ own Matrix trilogy.
For all these exertions, Cloud Atlas was rewarded with a grand total of zero Oscar nominations, and little wonder: 172 minutes in the company of this monster would have most Academy voters scrabbling for the Panadol.
Where Mitchell’s novel nested its narratives one inside the other, the film cuts between all six quickly and often, bouncing between mirrored dialogue and images. (A dash across a sailing ship’s rigging in 1849 dovetails with a hairy escape across a tightrope-like walkway in Neo Seoul.)
Familiar faces yield further echoes. Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, Jim Sturgess, Ben Whishaw, Jim Broadbent and the Korean actress Doona Bae each star in a strand in which their character has been branded by fate with a comet-shaped birthmark; elsewhere, in supporting roles in other people’s stories, they are often made up and prosthetised right to the brink of recognisability. In the 1970s plotline, Hugh Grant plays a smarmy energy boss that’s right in his wheelhouse, but flash forward to the post-apocalyptic future and there he is running around in beads and a loincloth, slathered in blood, mud and warpaint.

Well, it’s certainly a blast spotting the links. Ben Whishaw, who gives the film’s richest, most affecting performance as an ambitious composer’s assistant in the 1930s story, also plays a record-shop employee in the 1970s bit, who sells a rare vinyl edition of 1930s-Whishaw’s compositions to Halle Berry’s sleuthing journalist. And Jim Sturgess, a nascent abolitionist in the 1849 tale, becomes a revolutionary who frees clones in future-Korea, even if his yellowface prosthetics make him look rather like a back-row member of a Vulcan boyband.
Tykwer and the Wachowskis have laboured long and hard to turn Mitchell’s very literary material into something cinematic. (In the novel, every story goes on to be 'discovered’, as a book, a set of letters, a film, or even a religion, by a later character.) But in doing so, the subtler points of Mitchell’s book are lost in the visual melee. Other movie hydras — D.W. Griffiths’ Intolerance (1916), Darren Aronofsky’s The Fountain (2006), Leos Carax’s Holy Motors (2012) — use their interconnectedness to tell us wise and wild things, but Cloud Atlas sweats the connections themselves. It may be the most elaborate join-the-dots game ever drafted.

New study reveals more Oscar winners thank Harvey Weinstein than God

The anatomy of an Academy Awards speech: New study reveals more Oscar winners thank Harvey Weinstein than God and less than HALF thank the Academy

'I'd like to thank the Academy' has become one of the most widely recognisable phrases of the Oscars.
But new research reveals less than half of actors and directors say it when accepting their golden statuettes.
A study of Oscars speeches over the last 60 years has revealed Harvey Weinstein is the person who has been thanked most with a total of 12 mentions - more than God.
Classic: Sally Field exclaiming, 'You like me!' for her win for Places in the Heart (1985), remains one of the most memorable Oscar moments to date
Classic: Sally Field exclaiming, 'You like me!' for her win for Places in the Heart (1985) remains one of the most memorable Oscar moments to date
Georgia Tech master's student and lead researcher Rebecca Rolfe watched more than 200 speeches from 1953 - the first year the ceremony was televised - in a study focused on gratitude.
Analysis was conducted on 207 of the 300 speeches Rolfe was able to view for the study, focusing on five categories: actor/actress in a leading role, actor/actress in a supporting role and best director.

Results published in ScienceDaily.com reveal almost half of the winners thank family; there are 11 total mentions of God and 12 of Weinstein.
The Miramax co-founder has produced films including The Artist, Django Unchained, Inglourious Basterds, The Reader and The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, and won best picture for Shakespeare in Love, starring Gwyneth Paltrow, in 1998.
Emotional: Halle Berry and Gwyneth Paltrow, pictured accepting their respective Oscars for best actress for their roles in Monster's Ball (2002) and Shakespeare in Love (1999)

Something to shout about: Cuba Gooding Jr was among 26 per cent of actors who hoisted the trophy in the air after he won for best actor in a supporting role for Jerry Maguire (1997)

When they're not thanking Weinstein, forty per cent of winners say 'I'd like to thank the Academy', referring to their fellow members in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
Seventy nine per cent close by saying a version of 'thank you'.
Twenty-six per cent of winning actors hoist their statue in the air, while nearly 60 per cent of winning actresses cradle the award with both hands.
Rolfe said of the trends: 'Winners tend to start their speeches broadly by thanking the Academy or fellow nominees, then gradually make it more personal. After reflecting on the win's significance, they typically thank their peers, colleagues and sometimes even their lawyer before mentioning family.'
Tears have become more common over the years. Seventy-one per cent of tearful speeches have been made since 1995.
Memorable: Kate Winslet accepted the Oscar for best actress for her work in The Reader (2009)

Taking the stage: Kim Basinger gave her acceptance speech after winning the best supporting actress Oscar for L.A. Confidential (1998)

Twelve of the 15 last best actresses have shed tears, and only one director: Steven Spielberg for his Schindler's List win in 1993.
Rolfe reasons: 'Much like the movies, acceptance speeches are a type of performance. I believe the tears are real, but perhaps, maybe even subconsciously, actresses know what is expected of them when they accept the honor. Maybe the public has come to expect an emotional speech, so actresses are more emotional than they would be otherwise.'
As Science Daily reports, speeches have also become more drawn out over the decades, lengthening from an average of 40 seconds to nearly two minutes in current day, with only nine of them being cut off by the orchestra.
AP-Google Journalism and Technology Scholarship Program, overseen by the Online News Association, funded the study.

The 85th Academy Awards ceremony is scheduled to broadcast live from Los Angeles on February 24, hosted by comedian Seth MacFarlane.
Best picture nominees include: Amour, Argo, Beasts of the Southern Wild, Django Unchained, Les Misérables, Life of Pi, Lincoln, Silver Linings Playbook and Zero Dark Thirty.
Bradley Cooper, Daniel Day-Lewis, Hugh Jackman, Joaquin Phoenix and Denzel Washington are up for best actor in a leading role; Jessica Chastain, Jennifer Lawrence, Emmanuelle Riva, Quvenzhané Wallis and Naomi Watts will compete for best actress in the same category.
Best director nods also go to Amour (Michael Haneke), Beasts of the Southern Wild (Benh Zeitlin), Life of Pi (Ang Lee), Silver Linings Playbook (David O. Russell) and Lincoln (Steven Spielberg).

Life's a beach! Halle Berry treats her cute daughter Nahla to a fun-filled evening at the pier

She may be an extremely busy Hollywood star but Halle Berry still makes time to treat her daughter to exciting days out.
The actress blended into the crowd as she and little Nahla spent an evening at Santa Monica Pier on Tuesday.
The mother and daughter duo strolled leisurely around the Los Angeles landmark while hand-in-hand, taking in the sights.

Halle was wrapped up warm for a chilly day in an oversized cream knitted cardigan along with a hoodie and thick grey scarf.
The Cloud Atlas star was also sporting skinny jeans tucked into clunky black suede boots.
Meanwhile four-year-old Nahla looked cute in a patchwork jacket, black scarf, denim skirt, and cosy pink leggings with brown boots.

Every child can't wait to hear the school bell ring for home time and Halle Berry's child is no different.
But it seems the actress was just as happy on Tuesday when she collected her little girl Nahla.
The actress was all smiles as she arrived to pick her adorable child fathered by ex Gabriel Aubry.

The youngster - who turns five-years-old this March - seemed giddy as did the 46-year-old Cloud Atlas star who tried to keep up with her quick-stepping offspring.
Her toned legs were draped in form-fitting denim pants as she walked up to fetch her daughter.
Appropriately dressed for skies which were threatening rain, she donned a well-cut knee-length coat and big boots with a casual stripy sweater.

Nahla, not to be outshone by her mother, looked predictably cute in child-size construction boots.
Setting off her wintry outfit, the young girl wore stripy tights, a denim skirt and a miniature blazer.
Running ahead of her mother the preschooler was adorable in her school get-up and had her hands free while her doting parent clutched on to her pink lunch bag.

Halle keeps a busy schedule between full-time mothering and her film career.
Her new feature, The Call, is scheduled for release on March 15.
Later this year she is set to film Shoes Addicts Anonymous, where the Oscar winner stars as a shoe addict who must join a support group.

Nahla bravely jumps on a trampoline bungee as mother Halle Berry watches on in glee

She's a fearless flyer! Nahla bravely jumps on a trampoline bungee as mother Halle Berry watches on in glee

      By Daily Mail Reporter

With genes as good as Halle Berry's daughter Nahla, the sky's the limit for her future.
      Actress, model - circus performer?
The four-year-old was seen trying out the later on Monday as she jumped with glee on a trampoline bungee ride offered by the Trapeze School at the Santa Monica Pier in Los Angeles.

Halle was bursting with pride as her little girl bravely suited up in the bungee and kicked up into the air.
Nahla is the only daughter of the Monster's Ball actress and Canadian model Gabriel Aubry.
The youngster was dressed in a trendy black jumper with a pink skeleton logo on the front.
Underneath a pair of denim shorts, the pretty girl wore warm rose-coloured tights.

On her feet were a pair of sturdy construction-like boots.
Halle was equally trendy with a black shirt and burgundy scarf wrapped around her neck for warmth.
Although her daughter's hair is long and loose, Halle has been keeping her hair very short and spiked.

Watchful mama: Halle at times appeared nervous to see her little girl fly up in the air

It was obviously the Academy Award winner's day with her daughter. Custody of Nahla is split 50/50 between the 46-year-old Atlas star and the Calvin Klein model.
The two have been battling it out in court over custody and financial arrangements since they broke up two years ago.
Halle tried to move to France with fiance Olivier Martinez, but a Santa Monica judge nixed that idea and order her to stay in LA to honour their shared custody agreement.

They are one of the most coveted boots of the winter season.
And Halle Berry rocked a pair of Isabel Marant Milwauke studded suede and leather ankle boots as she strutted through Los Angeles airport with fiance Oliver Martinez on Sunday.
The 46-year-old actress tucked the trendy footwear into a pair of figure-hugging leather trousers which displayed her enviable legs.

Worn by the likes of fellow A-listers including Miranda Kerr, the Milwauke boot don't come cheap with their $1,495 price tag.
The footwear features cowgirl-inspired studs and a bracelet-style adornment at the front.

Halle and Olivier seemed in good spirits as they made their way through the terminal.
It is unknown where they were going, but this time they were without Halle's daughter Nahla, four.
The youngster it seems is currently in the care of her father, Gabriel Aubry.

The Canadian model was snapped holding the little girl's hand after picking her up from school on Friday afternoon in Beverly Hills.
The 36-year-old looked like any proud father as the two walked along the pavement, with Nahla pointing and gesturing while her dad carried her pink school satchel and a storybook.
Halle's ex was reportedly distraught when the actress tried to take his daughter to live in France. The pair eventually reached a custody agreement which means Nahla stays in the US.

Halle, who pays Aubry a reported $20,000 a month in child support, struck a deal with the Canadian model last year.
Aubry escaped prosecution after a brawl with Halle's partner Olivier Martinez on Thanksgiving Day.
He was initially charged, however those were later dropped with the French-Canadian ordered to stay out of trouble in the next year.
Halle and Olivier both reportedly felt it would not be in Nahla's best interest to prosecute her father for the fight.

Cloud Atlas, the new film starring Tom Hanks, Halle Berry and Hugh Grant will have its UK premiere in Glasgow later today.

The Hollywood blockbuster was partly shot in the city and the premiere at the Glasgow Film Theatre is part of the annual Glasgow Film Festival.

Glasgow has hosted a number of Hollywood films in recent years. Fast and Furious 6 shot a number of car chases on the streets of Glasgow and shooting for Brad Pitt’s Zombie movie World War Z shut down a number of streets in the city.
