Amazon has acquired the exclusive UK rights to sci fi drama Extant, which stars Halle Berry, as it ups its battle for prime programming content with Netflix.

Amazon will stream the series, which has been produced by Steven Spielberg's Amblin Television and CBS Studios, on its Prime Instant Video service, formerly known as LoveFilm in the UK.

"Extant is a bold and thrilling new series from some of the biggest names in entertainment," said Chris Bird, Amazon Instant Video film and TV strategy director. "Having such a highly anticipated and star-studded show premiere exclusively on Prime Instant Video is a perfect example of our ongoing commitment to bringing the very best in movie and TV entertainment to our customers in the UK."

Under the deal, Amazon will stream the episodes the day after broadcast in the US, with the first US broadcast on 9 July.

The show, which was launched last week at the LA Screenings, is a mystery thriller that stars Berry as an astronaut trying to reconnect with her family after a year in space.

"We're excited to see Extant stream on Amazon in the UK," said Armando Nuñez, chief executive of CBS Global Distribution Group. "With its stellar talent, unique concept and production auspices, Extant is sure to be this year's television event in the US, UK and around the globe."
